Are sports suitable for older people?
When we talk about sport, we usually associate it with young people or children. And it is true that children benefit the most from it, while young adults perform the best. So it\’s not surprising that we focus primarily on these two groups. However, we are somewhat forgetting the elderly. They, too, make up a large part of our population, and they, too, should be able to make a living through sport.
It is true that we tend to think of older people as suffering from various health problems, the most common of which is arthritis or spinal problems. So we do not think of them as a group that could or even would like to play sport.
However, this does not correspond to reality. With ever better and more affordable health care, there are more and more people who are active and in surprisingly good shape, even in old age. And they usually want to maintain it, with sport being one of the best ways. However, most of the time, they don\’t have very good opportunities for exercise.
Certainly, it is true that in the vast majority of communities there are all sorts of sports clubs, be it football, tennis, hockey or whatever else. The problem is that most of these clubs are primarily focused on performance rather than recreational sport, which makes them essentially unsuitable for older people. Of course, there are exceptions, but they are few and far between.
So today\’s seniors are basically left with no choice but to play sports themselves, mostly by going for a run or riding a bike. They do not have much chance in organised sport in our country, and that is a pity. They too can benefit from sport, not only physically but also mentally. However, since we have largely fixed them as disabled, we simply do not give them this opportunity.
The main reason why this is so is, of course, finance. The successful sports clubs, those whose members win, get the most money, whether from spectator attendance or from subsidies. Therefore, they only want prospective members, which seniors unfortunately are not.
